Converting audio files from .WAV to .MP3

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

If for some reason you (like Jenny Hunsperger) are having trouble getting Audacity to export to .mp3 format, there are other options for file conversion.  Here are two I’ve found:

Here’s free software you can download:  http://www.nch.com.au/switch/

Here’s a free online converter:  http://www.zamzar.com/

I haven’t tried either of them, but they both appear to convert .WAV files to .MP3 files.

Exporting from Audacity to MP3 format

I am using freeconferencecall.com for my audio interview, and I have a Mac. I am having trouble exporting the file from Audacity as an mp3; apparently you have to use LameLib, which I downloaded and tried again, but my computer can’t open the files. They have weird path names like “.pmproj” and “.dylib”. Has anyone dealt with this yet? Have any idea what program to use to open those files? I’m completely stuck because I can’t get it to export as an mp3 and podbean.com does not support WAV files. Please help! I’m desperate!

Here’s an answer (but please note I don’t have a Mac, so can’t vouch for this working for all):

The LAME “library” enables Audacity to export files as MP3’s. Think of it as a plugin for Audacity. To make it work, you need to (1) download a compressed file, (2) uncompress it and place the resulting files somewhere on your computer; and then (3) tell Audacity where it can find the plugin. The instructions about what to do are here:http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=install&item=lame-mp3and here (linked from the preceding page): http://spaghetticode.org/lame/

You need to uncompress the files and store them somewhere (anywhere, actually) on your computer. You don’t need to open or run those files directly. The first time you try to export an .mp3 file from Audacity, it will prompt you to tell Audacity where you have stored the key file (which in Windows is called lame_enc.dll, may be different on the Mac) If for some reason you *don’t* get prompted by Audacity, you should be able to set up the plugin through the Audacity interface itself. On a Windows machine, you:* click Edit | Preferences
* go to the File Formats tab
* Under MP3 Export Setup, click “Find Library”
* Navigate to the file using the File window and click “Open”
… I don’t know whether this is done differently within the Mac interface to Audacity, but I would expect the process is similar.

Is there a way to redirect my blog site, so that when someone clicks on/goes to my old Wordpress.com blog, it will send them to my new URL?
